West Devon
West Devon is the largest district in Devon and one of the 60 most rural areas in England. Dartmoor National Park lies within West Devon, making up 45% of the area. The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty also lies in West Devon. Okehampton and Tavistock are examples of two of the towns worth visiting in West Devon.
Okehampton
Okehampton has been greeting visitors for over 2000 years. It is a perfect base for a West Country break. The town lies in the centre of Devon and enjoys excellent transport links. Situated in the heart of Devon, on the shoulder of Dartmoor, Okehampton offers a wealth of wildly differing landscapes. In addition to rolling hills the area enjoys great expanses of fresh water with nearby Roadford Lake providing more than 730 acres for water sports, fishing and bird watching.
Tavistock
Tavistock, a small market town lies on the western edge of Dartmoor. There is a charming country atmosphere in the town with its pannier market and many old fashioned specialist shops suiting many tastes and needs. There are also many lovely walks you can take through the town, especially along the canal.
Dartmoor
Purple, heather clad moorland, wide open landscapes, rushing rivers and obscure stone tors shape the landscape of Dartmoor. There are also rolling valleys, bogs and wetland, waterfalls and well trodden paths, ancient eerie forests and lonesome ruins. Dartmoor has an abundance of wildlife; some rare and some more common. Dartmoor ponies, cattle, butterflies, birds of prey, otters, grey squirrels and deer all inhabit the National Park.
Tamar Valley
An area of breathtaking scenery and steeped in history, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Tamar Valley has a rich and varied wildlife, particularly the estuary, which is an important haven for birds such as the avocet and little egret. You’ll find something for all tastes – great walking country, trips by boat and train, charming villages and local attractions.
